A Closer Look at Berber Carpets

One of the more popular carpet styles in the last thirty years is the Berber carpet. Based on a traditional North African tribal carpet style, the modern commercial Berber carpet has been the top choice for homes, offices and schools for its durability, high resistance to stains and affordability. However, while a Berber carpet may sound ideal, it’s worth taking a closer look to see if it is a good fit for your home.

The Pros and Cons
Along with their affordable pricing and stain resistance, Berber carpets are ideal for homes with young children as they are easier to clean. Berber carpets are often loop constructed, meaning spills will sit on top of the carpet and make for easy, quick clean up.
A loop construction does mean that a Berber carpet is more susceptible to snagging and unraveling. Snags occur when an item gets caught in a loop, which can happen when moving heavy objects across the carpet, or by a cat who likes to sharpen their claws on the carpet.

What’s It Made Of?
Berber carpets are typically made from four fibers: nylon, olefin, polyester and wool. Olefin is the most popular fiber choice for Berber carpets, due to its lower price and high-stain resistance, but is easily crushed in high traffic areas, leading the carpet to look dented and dirty over time. Nylon is seen as the middle ground between olefin and higher quality fibers, and is more resistant to crushing. Polyester (also called a PET Berber) is made from recycled plastics and is ideal for the environmentally-conscious homeowner. A wool Berber carpet offers comfort and longer lasting durability than most other Berber carpets, but the cost may make you think twice about purchasing.

The choice of fiber of your new Berber depends on the type of area you’re looking to install. Take high-traffic areas and children into mind before settling on the type of carpet fiber.
